Last weekend we ventured out to the Wintertime Farmer’s Market in Pawtucket, held every Saturday (from Nov-May). Open from 9 am–1 pm, the market fills the halls of Hope Artiste Village, a restored and renovated mill, with over 50 stalls selling both local food and artisanal products. You’ll see tables filled with every kind of goodie: organic veggies, salsas, pickled carrots and baked goods, just to name a few!

We set out this time, not just to shop for groceries, but to find the good eats inside the market to nosh while you shop.

Snacks: When you need just a li’l something.

north Bakery

From bagels to muffins and granola, north Bakery has something for everyone. A brain child of Johnson & Wales grads James Mark (chef/owner of north) and Kelly Dull, they opened the bakery in Providence’s West Side almost two years ago. Don’t leave without giving their $1 meringues a try.

¡Hola!

Based in Cranston, this bakery is orchestrated by an incredible one-woman show. Crystal Periera started only a couple months ago with the help of Hope & Main, Rhode Island’s first culinary incubator. Since her July 2015 debut, she has developed a loyal following and hopes to open her own shop soon. We fell absolutely in love with the butternut squash and queso fresco empanada.

Two Little Buns

Looking for gluten-free options? This little shop is your best stop. From amazingly crisp crackers to an insane variety of breads and other delectable baked goods, it’s hard to imagine everything is gluten-free. If you’re looking for something light to munch with a great crunch, try a scoop of their Cheesy Crunchers (which are also vegan!).

Fully Rooted

Fully Rooted offers some of Rhode Island’s finest fresh-squeezed juices. They serve up raw cold-pressed juice flavors ranging from Apple Pie to Green Lemonade. They also serve fresh juice shots—wheatgrass or “Breath of Fire.” We recommend the latter if you’re looking for a spicy tastebud zinger. Don’t be afraid to give it a go!

Br(L)unch: When you want something filling and delicious (with room for dessert).

La Creperie

You might know this group of goofy and friendly chefs from their little spot off Thayer Street on Fones Alley in Providence. They’re now making delicious crepes to round out your market experience. They serve both savory and sweet crepes—the perfect excuse to get two—one for lunch and one for dessert! Made right on the spot, our favorites are anything including winter spinach and brie or mozzarella and roasted red peppers.

DELIcious

If you like a good variety of easy, portable and healthy foods to choose from, this is the spot. You’ll find a wide range of mediterranean-inspired eats, from pita chips to falafel boxes, vibrant edamame, beet or farro salads, baba ganoush and so much more. Based in Cranston, this DELIcious deli won’t disappoint. We fell for the house-made hummus and pita chips coupled with a nice, fresh salad.

Somethin’ Sweet: For that post-market satisfaction.

Humble Pie Company

This little company makes pies big and small, both sweet and savory. They sell their pies at different farmers’ markets and cafes (like The Shop and Small Point Cafe, among others). The Lemon Tart and Chocolate Chess Pie are a must try. If you’re looking for something a little less sweet, the Bacon Butternut Quiche is filled with fresh local eggs and cheese.

Laughing Gull Chocolates

For all the chocolate lovers out there, this is should be your first stop. Their motto: “Saving the world with chocolate.” We agree! They use all direct-trade and premium local ingredients to create some of the best truffles we’ve ever taste. Our favorites? Hmm … all of them. But if you can only choose one (or two, right?) we’d suggest Salted Caramel or their seasonal special (this time it was pomegranate honey—yum!).

The Ultimate Combo: For those bold enough to mix and match!

Ocean State Smoked Fish Company + Seven Stars Bakery

A match made in heaven—the “must try.” We loved Ocean State Smoked Fish Company’s smoked salmon salad. Delicious on it’s own, but once paired atop a fresh roll from Seven Stars Bakery (we’d recommend the multigrain or Durum round)—ethereal. We’ll be coming back for one next week!
