Keep the earthy feel of repurposed wood in the floors and benches with shades of slate and oyster in the walls. Set out a communal table, a few stools at the front window, a banquette with two small tables and a wooden leaning rail. Put magnetic paint on one wall for kids’ puzzles. Then position the shiny black handmade Florentine La Marzocco espresso machine front-and-center on the counter… and open (in August) The Shop.

Brown and RISD students regularly hang out; young families stop by; baristas quickly learn customers’ “regular” orders: “mixed iced tea?” (herbal and black teas brewed separately and mixed for “flavor and lift”). The coffee is from Portland, Oregon’s, Stumptown Roasters and co-owner John Paul Murton hails from Pittsburgh, but wife/co-owner Diana is a local who grew up in Warren, Rhode Island.

The pastries and breads are as local as can be—Foremost Bakery, Illuminated Oven and Humble Pie Company. The five kinds of espresso drinks are almost outshone by the Stumptown iced coffee, made from a concentrate and chilled with nitrogen, which puts in bubbles but doesn’t change the flavor. It’s a bright, light, non-acidic, cold brew.
